Woohoo! Once again our resident creative force, Michael De Leon has brought us another solid design for our Camp t-shirt. I don’t know what we would do without him. Thanks, Michael!

It’s hard to believe it, but in just a few days we’ll all be hip deep in the “Learn, Share, Grow” that is PodCamp San Antonio. The t-shirts have been ordered.  The banner and  badges are in the final design process and will be out the door by Tuesday. Even though this is the San Antonio Podcaster’s third go around, we are still as excited to kick this off as we were at the first one back in 2007.

Who knew how far our group would take the camp concept in San Antonio? Now we have Camps happening throughout the year. It’s great to have cultivated so much community all from a simple question asked by Micheal De Leon,

“When are we going to get a podcamp in San Antonio?”

Thankfully the answer was,

“We aren’t going to get a podcamp, we’re going to do a podcamp!”

Now we can see the rich community that has developed from those humble beginnings.

It’s that time of year again. PodCamp San Antonio 3.0 is on the horizon. When we first conceived of the idea for PodCamp San Antonio in 2007, we could never have imagined what would happen from those humble beginnings.

To say it’s been a whirlwind would be an understatement. From PodCamp San Antonio I in 2007, then PodCamp San Antonio: Numero Dos to the upcoming PodCamp San Antonio 3.0 so much has happened. San Antonio went from the place no one knew had a New Media and Social Media Community to a heavy hitter.

San Antonio can now count itself among cities who have held, Barcamp, Startup Weekend and Freelance Camp with so many more on the way. We have found our community and it all started with our humble PodCamp San Antonio back in May of 2007. To date we are still the only Podcamp in the State of Texas, however our good friends to the East of us on I-10 in Houston are hard at work bringing Podcamp Houston to life. We wholeheartedly support their efforts and are looking forward to attending Podcamp Houston on June 13, 2009.

You might be wondering what’s in store for PCSA 3.0. Let me tell you we are currently looking for another space that is uniquely San Antonio. If you will recall we held the first Podcamp at the Sunset Station. Then last year we happy to hold Podcamp 2 at El Tropicano Hotel which is like stepping into the 1960’s with a retro latin flair.

This year we are hoping to continue to capture the unique essence of San Antonio. Let us know if you’ve got an idea for a space that will both highlight the rich culture  and also show the modern hi-tech side of the Alamo City.

We’ll be unveiling a new logo for the 3.0 version of PodCamp San Antonio soon.

The success of an event like PodCamp San Antonio: Numero Dos (PCSA2) is no accident. It takes a core group of folks to make it happen. The Organizers dedicated their time, ideas and resources to bring it all together. Folks like:

Micheal De Leon: He along with Scott M. created our logo for this years event. Michael was also the creative force behind the PCSA2 shirt, badge, blog site and guide. The fact that he was working 2 jobs and keeping up with the Defending Champion San Antonio Spurs for his podcast meant his time was extremely valuable. Thank you Michael for giving up on more sleep to pull it all together.

Alysan Delany-Childs: Once again Alysan brought her media expertise to the table and was able to facilitate the promotion of PCSA2 via Press Releases and Video Releases. When we shot the Podcast Pickle Tour of San Antonio, Alysan was part of the small but nimble crew.  We braved the inclement weather to bring folks a wacky but fun video that showcased the friendly folks and sightseeing gems of San Antonio. Thanks Alysan for going along with all the zany ideas.

Shaine Mata: Although Shaine lives in the Rio Grande Valley, he is as active a member of the group as anyone who lives here.  He was the one who got things going back in March by posting to the blog, creating PCSA2 groups on Facebook, Upcoming and Pownce. He was present at all the Skype planning sessions and did all he could to help promote the event. Even though was unable to attend PCSA2 due to the early arrival of his beautiful daughter IO Evangeline, he was there in spirit. Thanks Shaine for all your contributions and being  such an important part of the group.

Todd O’Neill: When we were looking for ways to promote PCSA2 we thought video might be fun. Thankfully Todd didn’t run in the opposite direction when we asked if he would be our videographer. He filmed the fun promo video and then had the patience and energy to direct and shoot the Pickle Video on a gray and drizzly day. He has such a fun style of working with the folks around him. You can’t help but feel his positive energy. The work that Todd did shooting the video was complimented by the production that John D. Navarrete did on the Pickle Tour of San Antonio. Thank you Todd for jumping in with both feet, taking the vision and making it a reality.

Richard Galvan: The reason that we don’t have to worry about the A/V during PCSA2 is because Richard is in control.  The mics, mixer, video, projector all work seamlessly because having him in charge ensures things will work. It is a huge blessing to have someone who can take different A/V bits and pieces from different places and make them work as one. Thank you Richard for being such an audio dynamo.

The second annual Podcamp San Antonio was an amazing experience. From the light bulb moments in the Teaching Sessions to the shock and awe of using virtual world technology in education and advertising. The Learn, Share, Grow model was highly apparent. You could almost hear the synapses connecting in peoples minds as their concept of what education, business, fundraising, video production, medical outreach and social media tools expanded. The overwhelming theme of the comments I received throughout the day was, ” Wow, I didn’t know this existed or that you could even do things like that”.

I applaud the folks who not only attended but got up to introduce folks to the cool and amazing things they were doing using technology as a tool. The day started off with two separate sessions. The main room started off with Todd O’Neill and Susan Price sharing their experiences with Co-Working in San Antonio. Todd runs Co-Working La Taza every Tuesday and Susan has First Friday Co-Working at Firecat Studios every first Friday of the month. Next up was Michael Verdi who uses Second Life as a Video Production Studio for some of his latest machinima projects. The Second Life theme carried on to the next session Education/Pediatrics which was by David and Lupe Rupert who are part of the Pediatrics Department at UTHSCA. They are using Second Life as a platform to reach out to children and parents educating them about nutrition and exercise to combat obesity. The morning sessions ended with Shelly Brisbin sharing her knowledge on Portable Recorders. Check out the session recorded on video by Carol Turner to find out the details.

In the next room it was exciting to see all of the rapid-fire conversations happening inside the Teaching Sessions. So much great stuff was happening they decided to have more Teaching Sessions in the afternoon. The Attendees created their own sessions as the conversations and interest led them. Now if that isn’t the definition of an UnConference then I don’t know what is.

Alysan Delaney-Childs started with Blogging Basics. Followed by Fred Castaneda who shared his knowledge and expertise of Podcasting Promotion. Michael De Leon came next with Tips and Tricks Every Podcaster Should Know. Leslie Baldwin wrapped up the morning sessions by expounding on the Benefits of Doing Live Shows. The audio recordings of these sessions can be found on Leslie’s Talkshoe site.

During lunch the conversation continued and more new sessions were created. Such as A Detailed Look into RSS by Vidya A., Public Access Television by Patsy Robles and a Facebook discussion led by Richard Galvan.

A lively group discussion about the micro-blogging platform Twitter kicked off the afternoon sessions. The fun continued with Alan Weinkrantz who was informative and entertaining in his How to Generate Media Coverage for Your Blog. He shared a few of his blog media promotion techniques. Sometimes it is as simple as being in the right place at the right time and other times it involves a bit of creativity. Jay Ehret was up next with Brand Your Podcast.

With Startup Weekend San Antonio coming up on May 16-18 it was great that Erica O’Grady could be here to share her experience with the Startup Weekend movement. Connie Reece gave a presentation on the power of social media to make a difference. How to Use Micro Media for Macro Results told the story of the Frozen Pea Fund. The Education Panel was led by Brad Pearl, Vidya Ananthanarayanan and Angela Woodrow and sparked some lively debate on the knowledge gap between school and work. The sessions wrapped up with Richard Galvan sharing his professional experience with Mobile Phone Technology and New Media.

A stroll down the Riverwalk for a celebratory meal and a cold beverage or two was a perfect way to keep the conversation and fun going. We enjoyed PodCamp San Antonio: Numero Dos so much we think we might just to do it again next year. Keep your calendars clear for PodCamp San Antonio 3.0!

Our lovable friend has finally found the location for PodCamp San Antonio: Numero Dos. It’s the El Tropicano Hotel.

Along the way he saw the sights of San Antonio. The Tower of the Americas, The Torch of Friendship Sculpture, The Alamo and the festive Riverwalk. He also enjoyed meeting all the friendly folks in San Antonio. He’s already planning on coming back because San Antonio is his kind of town.
